1) Arabic Calligraphy Series
Arabic Calligraphy – Islamic calligraphy is the art of beautiful writing using the Arabic script. This art is the most adored of all Islamic arts, since it is through writing, that the Quran is transmitted and preserved. The Kufic script was the first form of Arabic calligraphy in the 7th century, however, since then there have been many variations of Arabic calligraphy that have developed. Cahn is more drawn to the Kufic script due to its very sharp and angular form. She has stylised this Kufic script to form her own style of Arabic calligraphic script, so people can recognise her work by this stylised version of the Kufic script.
i) In the Name of Allah, The Most Compassionate, The Most Merciful.
Basmalah (reciting Bismillah or Bismillahir Rahmaanir Raheem) is a recommended act in Islam before starting any action or deed. It means “In the Name of Allah, The Most Compassionate, The Most Merciful.” The Holy Qur’an starts with this very phrase. This simple phrase that takes only a second to say opens up doors of immense blessings and mercy from God as one strives to seek help and guidance from Him before working on any of their affairs. Before performing any action, reciting the Basmalah will make you conscious of the action you intend to do is sincere or not. This is also a very powerful way to keep oneself from committing sins, no matter how big or small they may be.
ii) The Remembrance of God is Greater
This is a verse from the Holy Qur’an of Chapter 2, Verse 153 which translates as: “Indeed, Allah is with the patient.” With so many challenges and tribulations in our lives, this verse serves as a beacon of hope, reminding us that God is always at our side and will ease our burdens. God states that patience and prayer are the most effective tools for alleviating the effects of the afflictions. It is a fact that the servant is either enjoying a bounty that he should be thankful for or suffering a calamity that he should meet with patience. A Hadith (tradition) states:
“Amazing is the believer, for whatever Allah decrees for him, it is better for him! If he is tested with a bounty, he is grateful for it and this is better for him; and if he is afflicted with a hardship, he is patient with it and this is better for him.”
Patience is a beautiful thing. It is a treasure that empowers you both internally and externally as it helps a person cope with adversity, persevere in opposing evil, and continue to do good in the face of adversity.
iii) The Remembrance of God is Greater – 2
This is an Arabic phrase that literally translates to “The Remembrance of God is Greater.” Our purpose in this life is to worship God Alone and to submit ourselves to Him, and Dhikr (remembrance of God) is one of the greatest ways of achieving this. As we connect with God through the prescribed actions and words, we can restore tranquillity, contentment, and purpose to our lives.
2) Elements of Nature
Elements of Nature – Wind, Water, Earth & Fire. These are fourfold. Without any one of these
elements, the world could not function in the orderly, balanced and perfect manner that it does.
i) Wind
“Indeed, in the creation of the heavens and the earth, and the alternation of the night and the day, and the [great] ships which sail through the sea with that which benefits people, and what Allah has sent down from the heavens of rain, giving life thereby to the earth after its lifelessness and dispersing therein every [kind of] moving creature, and [His] directing of the winds and the clouds controlled between the heaven and earth are signs for a people who use reason.” [Qur’an 2:164]
ii) Water
“And it is He Who sends down rain from the sky, and We produce thereby the growth of all things. We produce from it greenery from which We produce grains arranged in layers. And from the palm trees – of its emerging fruit are clusters hanging low. And [We produce] gardens of grapevines and olives and pomegranates, similar yet varied. Look at [each of] its fruit when it yields and [at] its ripening. Indeed in that are signs for a people who believe.” [Qur’an 6:99]
iii) Earth
“Do you not see that Allah has made subject to you whatever is in the heavens and whatever is in the earth and amply bestowed upon you His favors, [both] apparent and unapparent?” [Qur’an 31:20]
iv) Fire
“Yes, [on the contrary], whoever earns evil and his sin has encompassed him – those are the companions of the Fire; they will abide therein eternally.” [Qur’an 2:81]
3) Spirit of the Sublime
Spirit of the Sublime – Through these pieces of work, Cahn conveys a message about the Oneness of God, His Presence and His Existence. She makes use of the Arabic calligraphic script in these.
